Hey Baby! What's Your Number?

Get Tested- Know Your Numbers

You can rattle off your cell phone number, right?
Work to know these numbers - the most crucial indicators of your overall health.

I am in my car, heading south. It’s a gorgeous day and I am grumpy. Deep breaths, Kelli. Drive.

So that’s what I do. I drive to my annual well-women’s exam.  (What’s a well-woman exam? Read all about them HERE ) Taking another deep breath I park and head to my doctor’s office. This annual appointment always stresses me out. It shouldn’t I know, but the thought of getting on that industrial sized scale, stripping off my warm clothes and crawling into a paper ‘gown’ leaving me feeling exposed, cold, and vulnerable.

Many times, taking care of ourselves is a lot like flossing, you don’t really want to do it, but you know it’s good for you. As you’ve heard me spout off about many times before (#SelfCareStrategist), I’m a big believer in prevention. Prevention means getting the necessary tests and blood work done so that you can catch anything abnormal early. So here I am, and this time, I am focused on getting an update on my numbers.  “The numbers” I refer to are the key markers of heart health. Things like blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and body mass index (BMI.) By keeping those numbers within a healthy range, you can greatly improve your heart health and reduce your risk for heart disease. Good reasons, right?

Knowledge is power.

So today let’s get real. This blog is all about inspiring you, dear reader, to get tested and KNOW YOUR NUMBERS.  First, I urge you to read this article from Healthy State written by Patricia Chaney. It speaks to the numbers we all should know in each decade of our life .

Go ahead and read it. Then come back here and let’s talk. I’ll wait.

(Whistling and waiting…)

Good article, don’t you agree? Ok so…let’s talk about those numbers.

  1. Blood Pressure. Your healthy target: 120/80 mm Hg or less.

  2. Blood Cholesterol. Your healthy target: Total blood cholesterol lower than 200 mg/dL.

  3. Fasting Blood Glucose. Your healthy target: Up to 100 mg/dL.

  4. Body Mass Index. Your healthy target: 18.5 to 24.9.

So that’s not so daunting. Four numbers. Know ‘em, OK?

A funny name, I know. But I LOVE my Amphipod carrier for workouts! It easily fits my iPhone and I still have room for hotel key cards, ID, and cash. I bring it with me on my trips so I can listen to my own tunes during a workout. When I’m at home I walk the hills around my neighborhood and the Amphipod is right there with me.

Research tells us – that the easier it is for you to get moving, the more likely you’ll keep moving. This is one piece of workout gear I don’t want to live without! Check it out here:

Where is Kelli Now?

Tomorrow morning, (Saturday, April 27) I speak at the world’s ONLY Menopause festival. The festival, called “The Flushfest” is in Perth, Scotland. The people here are SO wonderful. And the gorgeous country side is TO DIE FOR.

More on my experiences in Scotland soon!

Until then - here is a picture of me with my feet in the North Sea:
